Smart Streets is a new website at Yale to promote safety on New Haven streets. As an avid cyclist, I have often feared for my safety as I ride the New Haven roads. But this website beautifully narrates city ordinances, safety regulations, and common courtesies for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

As a designer, I also appreciate how the website incorporates the language of road signs and then applies these stark visuals in an interactive way.

Be sure to take the quiz. I learned that all cars must stay at least 3 feet away from bicyclists on the road (including side mirrors) and that there is a $75 fee issued for riding a bicycle on the sidewalk (but there’s a $100 fee for talking on your cell phone or texting while driving a car).

After four years of separation, I have finally been reunited with my bicycle Eleanor. Last Friday she arrived, but the front wheel, fenders, seat, handlebars, and pedals were removed for shipping. I put her back together. Now, I don’t feel any of the many bumps of New Haven roads when I ride such a comfortable bike. Here she is at the Wooster Square Farmer’s Market.
